WE ARE FAMILY – ADOPT ME – 3-22-12

Thursday is my favorite day of the week, that is if it’s the day I’m at the Sacramento city shelter on Front St. photographing the dogs.  I want to give a shout out to Gina Knepp, the director, for knowing that photography makes a difference for these pups.  Presentation.  Aren’t we told about first impressions all our lives?  Would Nike ever market a shoe with one of the before photos?  Would anyway?  Photography is a small piece in the puzzle of getting more animals adopted from shelters.  Seeing how loving and sweet and eager these dogs are each week is such a joy.  The puppy who chewed through my sync cord today was especially cute, seriously.

Frank, Charo, Jana, Rocky, and a little Cocker spaniel, are just a handful of this week’s new dogs.  To see all the animals available for adoption go to http://www.cityofsacramento.org/generalservices/animal-care/adoptions/dog.cfm.

CHIHUAHUA GLAMOUR OR NOT – SHELTER ADOPTABLES – 3-15-12

Sometimes things need to be done in a certain way and not everyone approves.   There was no vote.  When the chihuahua’s heard they were going to a photo shoot, they started making demands.  They asked for a limo but got a mini-shopping cart.  They wanted pearls.  They got Mardi Gras beads and ribbons.  Gigi and Little Girl wanted steak and got peanut butter.  Mindy wanted a pedicure, but there was no time.  Lumpia wanted to go to Beverly Hills, but that was out of the question.  (We began to suspect that there has been to much TV in their previous lives.)  Ultimately when the din of their high-pitched barks died down, we could tell they were happy to get out of their kennel for a wee bit and be held.

SICK DOG DUMPED AT CAR WASH FOUND BY AN ANGEL, REALLY – 2-22-12

When Angel Domingue saw the white dog lying on a blanket in the corner of a south Sacramento car wash, she thought he might be dead. His feet, legs, mouth, and underneath were terribly pink, and his paws and tail were bleeding.  She and housemate Lee-Anna Postnikoff found that he was alive but weren’t sure he was going to make it.  The first veterinarian they went to on Franklin Blvd. wouldn’t treat him.  The second told them that it was a bad case of Demodex, a skin disease caused by a mite that is treatable.  Since January 9th, Angel and Lee-Anna have cared for Marley who has been staying at the car wash.  They visit him twice daily to give him medication, feed him, walk him, and clean up.  At night he is locked behind the gates at the car wash.  Other angels donated vitamins, bedding blankets and a dog house.  The city shelter on Front St. neutered him.  Very much on the mend,  this young, happy, and loving Marley will be going to the shelter Thursday to wait to be adopted.   Now all that he needs is a good home.  (Before photo below courtesy of Claudia Romero.)
